Final Grade

Final Grade

Final Grade

Final grading is the last step before sod or landscaping and must meet Alberta lot grading standards & pass inspection. We add fresh topsoil, smooth the entire yard, fine-tune all slopes, and ensure proper drainage away from the home. A correct final grade passes inspection, prevents water issues, and creates a clean, even base ready for sod or landscape installation.

Rough Grade

Final Grade

Final Grade

Rough grading shapes your yard after construction and is required before final grade in Alberta. We spread screened clay, correct low spots, establish proper slope away from the house, and prepare your lot for final grade or sod installation. A proper rough grade prevents pooling, erosion, and long-term drainage issues.

Earthworks FAQ (Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park)

Please reach us at Inquiries@McLeodsLandscapingSolutions.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes. In Edmonton & the surrounding area, rough grade must be completed, inspected, and approved before final grade can be performed. Rough grade sets the basic shape and drainage; final grade fine-tunes it for inspection and landscaping.

Rough Grade: Uses screened clay to build the yard shape, correct slopes, and prep the lot.

Final Grade: Adds topsoil, smooths everything out, and meets city lot-grading standards.
Both are required for proper drainage and to prevent water issues.

Most residential rough or final grades take 1–2 days, depending on yard size, access, soil conditions, and weather.

Alberta soils hold water, and frost heave is common. Proper grading prevents:

  • Water pooling
  • Foundation issues
  • Ice buildup
  • Erosion
  • Landscape failure
A correct slope away from the home is required by municipalities.

Yes — we supply screened clay for rough grade and premium topsoil for final grade, delivered and installed to proper depth and compaction.

Absolutely. New builds in Edmonton and surrounding areas often have compacted, uneven soil. We handle the full process from rough grade → final grade → sod installation or landscaping.

Yes — our skid steer services cover:

  • Material moving
  • Yard leveling
  • Gravel/rock spreading
  • Tear-outs
Perfect for landscaping, renovation, and small earthworks projects.

We can still complete grading, but tight-access yards may require:

  • Smaller equipment
  • Additional hand work
  • More time on-site
We always review access during your estimate so pricing is accurate from the start.

Yes — we remove old sod, soil, rock, and debris as part of the site prep process when needed.

The ideal window is late spring through fall when the ground is thawed and dry enough for proper compaction.
